Maharashtra's Doctor strike

Mumbai: Over 4,000 resident doctors in Maharashtra' govt doctors avoided duty on Monday to show their protests for the incidents of assault on their colleagues, influencing the public healthcare services framework.

The issue additionally came up under the watchful eye of the Bombay High Court with an activist filing an appeal seeking an order to the doctors to report back to hospitals as soon as possible. The patients in different government-run hospitals suffered due to this strike.

Most of the hospitals, some senior resident doctors took care of the daily health checkups of the patients, according to the authority of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

MARD also stated that the emergency services were not affected due to the protest.

The doctors did not answer to work to protest about the two recently happened incidents — one in Dhule and another at the Sion Hospital in Mumbai — where relatives of patients assaulted the doctors present there.

"There are two or three long-pending requests from the state government, including higher wages and greater security at the hospitals," a senior MARD official said anonymously.

"Both the demands have not been satisfactorily addressed. Thus, we get assaulted every now and again and the state government neglect to address the issue," a doctor said.

State Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan stated, "We are holding transactions with the MARD individuals. There has been a significant monetary allotment in the state budget for infrastructure improvement."

In the meantime, social activist Afak Mandaviya on Monday moved to Bombay High Court looking for doctors to call off their protest and report back to work asap.

Mandaviya had earlier filed a PIL focusing the issue of doctors going on strikes so frequently, causing public inconvenience.

"Amid the hearings on the PIL, the MARD had guaranteed the court that from now on, it would not give a call or go on a strike anyplace in the state and would just hold peaceful protests about their grievances which included assaults on doctors by relatives," Mandaviya's legal advisor Datta Mane said.

Mane said the state government had guaranteed the High Court before that it would give police security at the state and community run hospitals to avoid such assaults in future.
